Coles Plant Centre is the retail branch of James Coles and Sons (Nurseries) Ltd, the UK’s largest grower of trees and shrubs for amenity and landscape planting. Coles Nurseries grow a range of over two million shrubs and one million trees in over six thousand different varieties, across production sites throughout Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.
The company was created in 1913 when James Coles first purchased an eight acre plot of land in Evington, Leicester, after managing a number of other nurseries throughout the UK. Since then the company has been passed down through the family, first to James’ sons Fred and William, then to his grandson Geoffrey and now to his great-grandson, James. Expanding all the while; the company now occupies over five hundred acres of land and employs over one hundred members of staff.
Coles Plant Centre was first opened as a retail shop on London Road, Leicester, in 1933. It later moved first to Oadby and next to its current site in Thurnby, where it has remained since 1982.
Being a part of Coles Nurseries, Coles Plant Centre can offer an unparalleled range of trees, shrubs, climbers, herbs, conifers and grasses, all available to view at the Centre. A plant ordering service is also operated, giving customers the opportunity to order plants not stocked at the Plant Centre. This service generally has a very rapid turnaround time, as most plants are grown on the Nursery within a twenty mile radius.
